I broke my poor 60CSx

Postby addisonbr » Sat Dec 12, 2009 7:41 pm

So while in Texas I dropped my 60CSx as I was getting out of the car, and it fell two or three feet to the pavement. I've done something similar a bunch of times before, but this time my little unit wasn't able to shrug it off. It seems to have lost the ability to read the memory card, and maps no longer update dynamically - the map gets stuck on "Drawing..." when I move around, or if I try to zoom in or out.

Garmin offers an "out of warranty" repair service for the 60CSx for $110 (they run about $280 new these days).

So here is my question. Would you pay $110 to repair / refurbish a 3-year-old 60CSx, or would you buy a new Oregon or Colorado?

So sorry to hear about your 60CSx!! Bummer.

...and our answer here depends on who you ask. For me I perfer the Oregon (over the Colorado and the 60) but "L" prefers the 60CSx over both! There is no way she would ever give up her 60CSx for caching or navigating. And she, like me, has used all three...

If we lived a bit closer I would let you test drive mine for a while ... so maybe you can get your hands on a local one to try.

The repair job is quite bit less than a new Oregon I think.

To make it quicker "out of warranty repair service" usually involves switching it out for a refurbished unit they have in stock. Then they repair/wipe out your broken unit (if repair is possible) and offer that to someone else needing similar service. So that's something to consider.

I'd say if you can afford it, get a new unit and be careful. You may even (if you want to recoup some of the costs) be able to sell the unit on EBay, someone looking for parts or just wanting to fix it just might buy it. Good luck!

Time for a new Oregon!
I have used the Oregon 400t for the last year & love it.
Add the iPhone with GC software and you are GOLDEN!

Happy Holidays!

of course, the 60csx features the legendary SiRFstarIII gps hardware whereas with the more recent devices you are going with the MTK 3318 which, if you believe the gpspassion blogs is plagued with accuracy issues...

Knock on wood, but if it was me and I broke my 60csx I would be online right now looking for the cheapest deal for a new one.

So, it seems I may have thrown $110 down the toilet. Got the replacement unit back today, carded and batteried it up, and... same exact problems. Huh? I know it's not the same unit, because my youngest used the antenna as a teething tool one morning way back when and this one hasn't been treated so disrespectfully.

I finally reasoned that the only thing that was the same between then and now was the memory card, so I took it out and it all works fine now. So you're telling me that when I dropped my 60CSx, nothing got knocked around in the unit itself, but the SD card (with no moving parts or circuit board connections!) somehow got corrupted at that very instant?

Uggggghhhhh. I'm an idiot.

not for nothing, but the specialists that you sent the unit too are bigger idiots. especially if they turned on the unit and were like, "this is broken, lets send him a new one" and the only thing wrong was your sd card.

The SiRFstar chipset is the reason why I won't give up my 60CSx, and wouldn't trade it for an Oregon. Interestingly, there's a new unit coming out soon, the GPSMAP 62. I'll watch for the reviews on that one...

i have both a colorado and a 60cx and have used them together - when placing a cache i used both units to take 4-5 waypoints of the cache site. the scatter of positions reported is very similar, indicating to me that the 60cx is in fact not any more accurate than the colorado.

the main difference is in usability. the cache app on the colorado is much richer in features. i can operate the colorado one handed while riding a bike. i can copy PQs directly onto the colorado without playing around in GSAK. although i own both, i choose the colorado every time.
