A lot of people also use clear tupperware containers. But the fact is that more often than not, we tend to tape them up and help with the camouflage so that people can't see them. So either way it's not going to help. IMHO, we should just repaint the cans so the scary writing is off of them or buy the ammo can sticker off of gc.com. I've come across a lot of caches in CT in ammo cans and when glancing through the log book I've noticed that non-cachers have found them and none of them seemed too concerned about them in the entries that they wrote.

An increasingly popular container being used is the lock-and-lock. A lot easier to get than the ammo can. Not quite as waterproof as the ammo can, but much better in that regard than most standard tupperware or other cache containers.

Keep in mind that most caches in Manhattan are micros or small ones that don't involve an ammo can, so I don't think it is too big of a problem. I don't think the authorities are as freaked out about the outer boros, where (at least within the borders of NYC) you'd see more ammo cans. When people in other parts of the country/world think of New York City, they usually think of Manhattan (and more strictly between the Battery and 96th Street (though some say in more recent years up to 125th Street)), so naturally terrorist activity, etc. focuses on these areas where they feel they'll get more attention (not to say that an act like this in a similar facility in upper Manhattan, the other boroughs, or the suburbs for that matter is less horrible, etc.) and thus that is where you'll see more hyped up security for these things.

Also note that a bombing like this occurred in the City just 2 years ago (i can't remember where or what kind of facility just that the news noted this) and it didn't spell the end of NYC caching. I think unless we see more of these incidents in say the next month or two it will be forgotten from the standpoint of how it would affect caching.

Maybe this does bode badly for ammo can caches in most of Manhattan, but I think there's not too many anyway and that overall it's not going to affect things too much.

The thing about ammo cans in Manhattan that will trigger the joint terrorist task force into action, is not the camouflage or military style, as much as the location. There are certain locations in Manhattan that are under constant surveillance. One of them is the recruiting station in Times Square. The hooded bicyclist obviously knew this when he dropped off his bomb at 3:45 AM.
My experience placing caches in NYC has led me to 'downgrade' to micros several times now, and to re-locate numerous times to get them to places where no one will think they could cause damage.
My experiences with the NYPD, the joint terrorist task force, and from living in NYC, tell me that it is the 'perception of an immediate threat' that gets folks excited. And that it is the size of the cache more than anything else that makes it look dangerous.
At this time, the most dangerous thing in Manhattan is still considered to be an unattended backpack in any busy area.
I doubt that anyone would get to excited about any current Manhattan geocaches, unless they are left sitting out in a busy place.
If our caches remain well camouflaged, they're not going to panic anyone. Certainly the magnetic key container hidden within sight of the army recruiting station in Times Square never panicked anyone.
