newbie question on hiding a cache - semipublic

Postby marnball » Tue Apr 26, 2011 3:03 pm

Hi All

I am considering hiding a cache at a site that has free admission from Oct-March 31, and free hours Wed 4-6 and Sun 4-6 from April - Oct. I am a complete newbie. Would something like this be allowed?

Many thanks

The short answer is... maybe?

It depends a little on the nature of the site and the kind of admission that is charged. There is a fair bit of precedent for allowing caches in areas that require paid permits for hiking (Harry Dolphin knows a fair bit about that), although it's not a stone-cold lock. The further away you get from permit-based hiking, the greyer it gets. A cache at an amusement park that doesn't charge admissions on Tuesdays, for example, would probably have a steep uphill climb with the reviewers.

Working in your favor is that your site has a lot of free admission available. Working against you is that most of that free admission is from October through March, which is now in the rear-view window (or far off in the horizon). It's certainly possible, but realistically it could go either way.

The best advice I can give you is to approach your local reviewer with the situation and present your case - BEFORE you actually submit the cache for approval. I've found, both through my own experiences and through hearing about others', that the rules and guidelines are often interpreted a lot more strictly if the first time the reviewer is exposed to the situation is through a publication request. The same reviewer engaged in an email discussion before the cache is submitted and enlisted to try to figure out something that will work, is often a lot more flexible. I don't know who your reviewer is, but if it's New York Admin you can send him/her/them a message through the profile listing here:

Good luck!

I don't know where you are hiding it, but there is a BEAUTIFUL park in Greenwich, CT that is free from about November to April and very expensive the rest of the year (in fact years ago it was "Greenwich residents only" until a lawsuit forced an "opening") and there are 2 caches there, one hidden by a NY (Westchester) cacher:

So you could argue that with NY Admin (I'm assuming by posting here you're hiding in his territory.....CT is handled by someone else). Good luck!

I'm calling it now. Try to show those two caches to NYA and their reply will be "Please be advised that there is no precedent for placing geocaches." As quoted from the guidelines.

Oy... just realized - place opens and closes also - would be situation very similar to a cache at the NY Botanical Garden (I think NYBG cache is still there) - which charges admissions year round.

There are caches that require charging admission. That's why there is an attribute for it.

BUT... I'd have my permission letter from the land manager ready to go because I'm fairly certain Admin will require it in this case.

NY Admin said response would depend on whether privately operated / managed or publicly operated / managed.

Thanks all!
