Re: Whatever happened to....

Hmm. No hides or finds since mid-2007 and as you said hasn't logged in since mid-2008. It's always a bummer to see a cacher drop out of the game, but archiving his troubled hides and opening the area up to current cachers is probably the right thing to do.

Re: Maps for Garmin Etrex Vista HCx

... streets for instance. The City Navigator doesn't concern itself with topographical information, but is just fine for turn-by-turn instructions. Since I usually carry my GPSr with me when we travel (for caching), my wife and I use it to get around in the rental car as well (the navigation system ...

Re: Geocaching in NYT Magazine

One dead giveaway is when the author isn't familiar enough with geocaching to realize that caches aren't buried, and haven't been since the first few months. in geocaching, someone has always deliberately buried the treasure (or “cache”), noted its coordinates (usually someplace outdoors) ...

Re: Whatever happened to....

... respect and acknowledge the history of geocaching in the Metro area without necessarily locking that history forever in the present, especially since existing caches sometimes block new and future caches. Cache turnover can be a great thing. For starters, when an area opens up it gives new cache ...

Re: FTF Etiquette

... sporting thing to do. (I've even gone so far as emailing other cachers after being STF on a cache which is taking the FTF a while to log online - since I like to wait for the FTF to post first, other hounds don't have any other way of knowing that the FTF is no longer in play... The heads up has ...

Time Out New York article... from 2003

... while following the history of a dipped geocoin. The links in the cache description don't work, presumably because TONY has overhauled their site since the cache was placed. I tried to contact them a number of times for an updated URL but got nowhere fast, so the other day I stopped by their offices ...

Moral: Don't Lie to the Reviewer

... first couple of finders noted that the coordinates were way off, more than 100 feet, and one posted the readings he got at the site in his log (since edited out). Turns out the cache had originally been published with those coords, but there was a proximity issue. The owner submitted new coords, ...

Re: Custom NYC Attribute Icons?

I think it's a great idea. At first I didn't really see the point, since groundspeak has tons of options. But even just thinking about your first idea (closest subway line) I can immediately see why we might have use for some urban-centric ratings and attributes.

Re: Upper Manhattan

... definitely still there? It looks like the last successful log is 4 1/2 years ago and the container wasn't doing very well - have you checked on it since? And do you happen to know if the cache itself is behind any of the security fences? The sat. photos make it seem very possible, although they're ...

It's slowed in the last year or two, since mostly the same places are in our travel rotation. Somehow I didn't grab a cache when I visited my brother in Alaska a while back... That was ...

2nd Oldest NYC Cache about to go

... to note that "active" doesn't describe Vanny Cache very well... It's been a ghost of itself for quite some time. It hasn't been found since 2008, and by all accounts the tree that it was once located in has been more or less destroyed for much of that time. The cache owner hasn't recorded ...

... caches, a couple of "cooperation caches" with legs in New York, and so on. I also watch caches as a way of keeping tabs on my own, since a lot of folks don't log DNFs. If nobody's logging Snug as a Bug for a few days but I'm still seeing Found Its coming in for Gutch's CP Cache ...

Re: Innwood Park...bike friendly?

... Any suggestions for which stops are best on those lines for taking a bike on or off? Ah, good question. Maybe try taking the A instead of the 1, since the 207 stop on the A is marked handicap accessible, so you know that there will be a gated door you can get through: http://www.mta.info/nyct/service/aline.htm ...

"Meet Someone New" is gone :(

... leaving open the option of unarchival. It's too bad, it was a neat idea. I'm not even sure how many people here in New York knew about it, since the initial waypoint is listed in LA. For those interested in a similar concept, check out Marvelous Muttontown Preserve , about 20 miles away ...
