I recently made a Facebook page which some of you already belong to.

Look up NYC Geocaching or email me and I will add you.

May the 4th be with you in Times Square

... As another way of celebrating Star Wars Day this year, we will have a limited number of trackable lightsaber coins available for sale. The coins, which will be in the shape of a lightsaber, will represent both sides of the Force. The front of the coin is blue, representing the Jedis (Obi-Wan Kenobi, ...

Re: Tracking my search with my Garmin 305

I have the 305 which I've used primarily for running and cycling but I find it an effective tool for recording all my tracks for my days when I geocache. I usually hike out to Pelham Bay Park but drive to Van Cortlandt park. I use ...

Re: Interested in finding an "unpublished" cache?

... what I think is a clever hide is really as clever as I think. Wonder if we could have a sub-forum here on this site for us locals to post caches which don't meet the strict guidelines of Groundspeak . It would be unofficial of course but challenging and fun no less?

Five of Diamonds

... Of all of the caches in the Bronx, none that were placed prior to 2008 have fewer than two people "watching" them - except for this one, which has precisely zero folks keeping an eye on it. Nobody cares. A quick glance through the cache page and logs shows why this isn't surprising. It's ...

Puzzles Anyone?

... are some really good ones in the area that should be getting more traffic. Some of the best of the bunch (within 10 miles of Manhattan, beyond which it's difficult for me to get to): Five Star New York by Avroair 17 smilies - only about four per year. This is usually the only cache more than ...

Good GPSr for Schools?

... spotted, etc.) so that they plot them on maps later. They are a lucky class in that they have one of the school's three "Smart Boards", which is sort of like a computerized chalkboard; it doubles as a screen for the classroom Mac, so they can load the waypoints in and pull them up in ...

Re: Good GPSr for Schools?

Great, thanks for the suggestion. I saw that the HC model is on Amazon for only $137, which I am leaning towards even though it's a little more expensive... Not for the color so much as the USB connectivity (they have a Mac in the classroom so I think the PC serial ...

Re: Bridges, "Rock and Roll" (GC19FHX), "Handy Relief" (GC19NF1)

... but nobody, cares about. They treat these situations as humorlessly as they would someone waving a plastic gun near the presidential motorcade - which is to say with maximum response and zero risk. And so regardless of how challenging (or easy) a cache is, the admins want to steer clear of those ...

Re: I just HATE.....

... what we were up to after that. And the original-sized container was a HUGE hit. A far more memorable experience for us than if it had been a nano, which is often the "easy way out" for a cache hide. We loved it!

Re: Responsible muggles

... log he had been out looking for mushrooms or moss or something along those lines (the memory, it fades with age) and stumbled across the ammo can (which was pretty well hidden actually). He signed the log, took nothing and left a union handbook. Nice to occasionally be reminded that not all muggles ...

Re: New iPhone and Geocaching

... going to be allowing folks to provide "real time" GPS navigation (as opposed to more "poke" type applications, like "see which of your friends is at the bar you just walked into!"). I don't know if it's for liability, or because they plan to roll out their own navigation ...

Re: old cache still alive!

... is an extra step that groundspeak only occasionally takes (perhaps when they're ticked about something). I just went in to log a cache which has been archived since 2003, and didn't have any problems.

Re: It must not be about the numbers...

... for a living and why is/was HE there? Ah. He does a lot of environmental / geological survey work. In 2003 his company was contracted by the USGS, which was doing some environmental oversight for the navy on Adak. Running tests, establishing monitoring wells, that sort of thing.
