Dinering from the Verb 8 -- First Flight

http://coord.info/GC41MWD Dinering from the Verb 8 -- First Flight We are back for the 8th time. It's been a year since the last Dinering event -- Metro NY's favorite Geocaching Meet and Greet. This year, I am celebrating an airplane flight. I had never flown (in an airplane--AND ...

Interested in finding an "unpublished" cache?

... They only publish the coords for the 1st stage. Plus no one has made a find in 5 months. My cache was entitled "How 'erratic' are you?" since it is close to a large glacial erratic boulder at the northern tip of Hunter Island, north of Orchard Beach (Bx.) I think it's hidden in a clever ...

Re: Interested in finding an "unpublished" cache?

... to go back and look again but my plans went awry. So I emailed the owner and asked her to check its status. I thought it was only 5.5 months since anyone posted anything about it? I also sent a request to 2 other cachers I hold in high esteem about my situation and asked them if they could ...

Re: Bridges, "Rock and Roll" (GC19FHX), "Handy Relief" (GC19NF1)

... on that. I think this is why the caches in the subject line were retracted rather than archived - I've never seen another retraction before or since. Every other cache I've seen that later turned out to be in violation of guidelines has simply been archived, but in this case I think GC.com ...

Re: Geocaching in NYT Magazine

One dead giveaway is when the author isn't familiar enough with geocaching to realize that caches aren't buried, and haven't been since the first few months. in geocaching, someone has always deliberately buried the treasure (or “cache”), noted its coordinates (usually someplace outdoors) ...

Re: Whatever happened to....

... respect and acknowledge the history of geocaching in the Metro area without necessarily locking that history forever in the present, especially since existing caches sometimes block new and future caches. Cache turnover can be a great thing. For starters, when an area opens up it gives new cache ...

Re: FTF Etiquette

... sporting thing to do. (I've even gone so far as emailing other cachers after being STF on a cache which is taking the FTF a while to log online - since I like to wait for the FTF to post first, other hounds don't have any other way of knowing that the FTF is no longer in play... The heads up has ...

Moral: Don't Lie to the Reviewer

... first couple of finders noted that the coordinates were way off, more than 100 feet, and one posted the readings he got at the site in his log (since edited out). Turns out the cache had originally been published with those coords, but there was a proximity issue. The owner submitted new coords, ...

Re: Numbers in SF

... there on family trips a fair amount. I'm up to 20 states (if I get to call DC a state). No foreign countries. It's slowed in the last year or two, since mostly the same places are in our travel rotation. Somehow I didn't grab a cache when I visited my brother in Alaska a while back... That was ...

2nd Oldest NYC Cache about to go

... to note that "active" doesn't describe Vanny Cache very well... It's been a ghost of itself for quite some time. It hasn't been found since 2008, and by all accounts the tree that it was once located in has been more or less destroyed for much of that time. The cache owner hasn't recorded ...

Re: 1 Million!

... which has never happened before. I think the 1Mth waypoint was published in 2008, although it almost assuredly wasn't the 1Mth published cache since many waypoints have been assigned but not ultimately used.

Re: New Metro GC Award Category Suggestion

... caches, a couple of "cooperation caches" with legs in New York, and so on. I also watch caches as a way of keeping tabs on my own, since a lot of folks don't log DNFs. If nobody's logging Snug as a Bug for a few days but I'm still seeing Found Its coming in for Gutch's CP Cache ...

Mammut caches in NYC

... isn't particularly surprising - N 40° 46.367 / W 73° 58.261. It was to the left of the Naumburg bandshell, 85 feet from the hidden final of a since-archived multi-cache (although that geocache was active at the time of the Mammut contest). Also, interestingly / coincidentally, it's extremely ...

Washington APE Cache archived

... for the cache owner - a longtime geocacher with the username Moun10Bike (who, interestingly, created and released the first geocoins). He's since gone on to work for groundspeak and is by all accounts a good guy. Anyway, I'm not sure what exactly is going on or why, but last summer just ...
