Garmin discontinues a few

Postby addisonbr » Mon Mar 08, 2010 11:57 am

Saw a note this morning that Garmin is discontinuing their eTrex* line, in addition to the Colorado line. Looks like the iPhone (and other GPS-enabled smartphones) killed the entry-level eTrex models, and the Colorado gets its arse kicked by the Oregon.

Haven't seen a press release about it, but they're all listed in the "discontinued" section of the Garmin store.

Might be a good opportunity to load up on eTrex GPSr's at a discount from major retailers, as they price them to make room for the ongoing stuff. Especially for schools, etc.

* ETA - Looks like they're just discontinuing some eTrex models, not all of them. Nothing to see here folks, move along...

Interesting that the Colorado was killed so soon, but I always thought it was the "Edsel" of GPSr's and it was only a matter of time once the Oregon became mainstream.

I would imagine those iPhone GPSr's are less durable in the woods though than a GPS specifically made for hiking......the iPhone's "grandfather" for GPS was the Palm Pilot and the same argument used to be given about those.

While you can download a pq to your iPhone the battery life is the suck so they are really no good for a long hike.
They do come in handy though. Webcam cache anyone?

I'm a fan of R-trexes (I have almost 2 dozen) For training purposes, they are almost great (dwonloads are a problem) I have 2 Ventures and both died within 6 months.

I checked the Garmin site. It appears that the H series is surviving--but that's old news. Any e-trex model that does not have an H following it have been discontinued.
